Half Masting

Flags at Civic Centre flying at half-mast.

The half-masting of flags demonstrates collective respect and sorrow in the event of a death.

Flags at all municipal facilities will be flown at half-mast from the time of the notification of death up to and including the day of the funeral in the event of the death of:

  • the Sovereign or an immediate memeber of the Royal Family
  • the current or former Governor General
  • the current or former Prime Minister of Canada
  • the current Lieutenant Governor of Ontario
  • the current or a former Premier of Ontario
  • the current or a former member of the House of Commons for the Sault Ste. Marie riding
  • the current or former member of the Provincial Legislative Assembly for the Sault Ste. Marie riding
  • current members of the Sault Ste. Marie City Council
  • former mayors of the City of Sault Ste. Marie
  • current employees of the City of Sault Ste. Marie
  • a regular force or reservist member of the Canadian Armed Forces from the District of Algoma who is killed during an assigned tour of duty with the Canadian Armed Forces
During periods of half-masting, flags are still raised to full mast on Victoria Day and Canada Day.
