Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan

The City of Sault Ste. Marie was one of over 60 communities across Canada to receive funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities through the Climate Innovation Program. The goal of the initiative is to increase staff capacity with regards to climate mitigation and/or adaption.

The City is focusing its efforts on mitigation by developing a plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Sault Ste. Marie. The first step of this process is the creation of a community GHG emissions inventory. In September 2019, the City signed a resolution to join the Partners for Climate Protection program, which offers a five-milestone framework intended to guide Municipalities towards the development of a climate action plan:

  1. Creating a baseline emissions inventory and forecast
  2. Setting emissions reduction targets
  3. Developing a local action plan
  4. Implementing the local action plan
  5. Monitoring progress and reporting results

For Milestone 1, the City’s FutureSSM division worked with local energy distributors, Municipal staff and external agencies to collect aggregate community emission metrics. Where data was not available, provincial averages were utilized. These results, including GHG emissions by source, were presented to City Council on February 24. The presentation is available online. This data will set the stage for completing Milestones 2 and 3 of the Partners for Climate Protection program.

The City is now seeking feedback and ideas from citizens regarding next steps. A public open house is taking place on Wednesday, March 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Plummer Room on at the Civic Centre. The purpose of the event is to provide citizens with an opportunity to obtain more information on the community GHG emission inventory and to provide their input on ways that these emissions can potentially be reduced.

For those who cannot attend the open house, there’s an opportunity to provide feedback through a short GHG Reduction Plan survey. Anyone who completes the questionnaire will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to Shabby Motley. To take the survey, go to www.surveymonkey.com/r/ssmghgsurvey.
