Seniors programming to resume at DIC and NCC

Tuesday, September 1, 2020

Residents of the City of Sault Ste. Marie will have another chance to connect and be active as redesigned Adult 55+ recreational activities are set to safely resume Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

Health and safety continues to be a priority at both the Drop-In Centre and the Northern Community Centre. In compliance with Provincial Guidelines for opening facilities and in consultation with Algoma Public Health, the following standards will be in effect:

  • Many programs are being offered with a choice to attend in person or via Zoom.
  • Participants are asked to stay home if they are feeling ill or have been in contact with someone who is ill.
  • Pre-screenings will be conducted when entering the buildings to ensure participants, instructors and staff are safe to attend.
  • Masks will be required by all staff and participants at all times for indoor programming and are highly recommended for outdoor programs.
  • Physical distancing will be maintained in all programs. Group sizes will remain within regulations with only 50 participants allowed in the building for programming at one time.
  • Participants are asked to arrive no more than 10 minutes prior to the start of programming.
  • Program offerings reflect those that best fit within permitted activities, timeframes and cleaning requirements.
  • Equipment sharing or lending will be limited and participants are asked to bring their own supplies whenever possible.
  • Pedestrian traffic flow will be designated and distance markers will be in place in all locations with designated entrances and exits to decrease close interactions.
  • Hand sanitizer stations are available throughout the buildings for frequent personal use.
  • Facility rooms, hallways, washrooms and high frequent touch points will be sanitized at designated times each day as well as after each room use.

“We are taking every precaution to protect the well-being, health and safety of all those involved in programming and continue to work with health professionals to strengthen preventative actions so we can sustain reopening safely,” said Brent Lamming, Director of Community Services.

“The time the centres were closed pushed us to find new ways to connect with Sault Ste. Marie seniors. We are pleased with the work our team has done to transition some programming online but it is an important milestone for us to start reopening the Drop-In Centre and Northern Community Centre. We look forward to welcoming the community back to these important spaces.”

Fees apply to all programming and debit and credit card is preferred. Drop-In Pass Cards will be available for purchase in the coming weeks. To view program offerings visit: saultstemarie.ca/Active55.
