Public Information Session: Shape the Sault - Official Plan Review

Housing and Second Units

A public information session will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Sault College (Essar Hall, 443 Northern Avenue, Sault Ste. Marie) from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as part of the City of Sault Ste. Marie's Shape the Sault project. Through Shape the Sault, the City is creating a new Official Plan for the city that will guide local decision making on land use, development and public infrastructure over the next 20 years. The information session on September 19 will focus on housing policy topics such as affordable housing, housing mix and residential intensification.

Planning staff are also concurrently starting a process to amend the current Official Plan to add policies that permit and support 'second units', in advance of completing an entire new Official Plan. "This is in response to recent provincial requirements and local interest related to second units," says Don McConnell, Director of Planning. "Second units are self-contained residential units within dwellings such as basement apartments, or within accessory structures such as above garages. Second units and other residential intensification initiatives can provide benefits such as making efficient use of existing infrastructure."

All are welcome to attend this session and discuss housing and second units with City staff. Free parking for this event is available at Sault College after 4 p.m., and the entrance to the venue is located on Northern Avenue.
