Wendy A. Hamilton

Wendy Hamilton was instrumental in founding and organizing the Oral History of Sault Ste. Marie (OHSSM) project. The goal of the project is to capture stories about the history of our city and unique perspectives from past and present residents who experienced pivotal and interesting times during Sault Ste. Marie's history. The project enabled citizens and prominent figures the opportunity to tell their stories of life for the benefit of future generations. The project serves as an excellent resource for historians, documentarians and educators; interviews are archived at the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library and are available online.

Wendy has been involved in the local arts scene dating back to a Sault Theatre Workshop production of the Miracle Worker in 1964. Over the years she has been a playwright, producer and creative director and has served on numerous boards including the Sault Theatre Workshop, Arts Council of Sault Ste. Marie, and currently, Shadows of the Mind Film Festival.

A writer by trade, Wendy began her career at the local television station and later returned to the station to write and produce the award winning children's television series, Our Little House, employing local talent; and to produce the final Lions Club Christmas Telethon in 2001.

Her work has always been motivated by a deep connection to the Sault and a desire to share local stories through art. In 1997 she founded Theatre in Motion, a theatre company specializing in the delivery of original productions for local events that included MindLands, presented as part of Sault Ste. Marie's homecoming celebration 1998; The Immigrant Stories, created for the Irish trade visit in 2001; The Taking! created for the War of 1812 centenary celebrations; and Moments in Algoma, a story about the Group of Seven's first visit to this area.

Congratulations to Wendy Hamilton - recipient of the 2016 Community Recognition Award for Heritage Arts and Media Arts.
