Don't Wait - Check the Date!

Thursday, October 6, 2016

October 9-15 is national Fire Prevention Week. This year's campaign, 'Don't Wait - Check the Date', focuses on the importance of making sure you know how old smoke alarms are in your home and when alarms need to be replaced.

To find out the age of your smoke alarm, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the unit. The alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date; however, some alarms have different expiry dates.

During Fire Prevention Week, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services challenges the public to take a selfie of their family checking the expiry date of their smoke alarms. Post your photo on Twitter or Facebook using #checkthed8SSM for a chance to win prizes! Follow us on Twitter @SaultFire for more details.

Sault Fire Services reminds residents that smoke alarms are required on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test all smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button on the alarm, and replace batteries at least once a year or when the alarm's low battery signal begins to chirp.

Fire Services will be on-site at Canadian Tire October 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and at Walmart Great Northern Road October 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. to distribute fire safety tips and resources, in support of Fire Prevention Week.
