Flood Prevention Continues for Catch Basins and Ditches

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

The Public Works and Transportation Department (PWT) is asking for the assistance of city residents as they carry out their fall cleanup of leaves. Residents are reminded to not rake leaves onto roadways or into storm drains as leaves can cause drains to plug, resulting in potential flooding.

"PWT has crews checking high risk areas throughout the city in preparation of potential incoming high levels of rain and wind. Sweeping crews have been out over the last week picking up leaves to reduce the chance of catch basins being blocked. We have approximately 8000 catch basins to manage. We are asking residents to chip in and assist with making sure water can get to the nearest basin without restrictions," says PWT Commissioner Larry Girardi.

Residents should take caution when in close proximity of drainage systems. Parents should ensure children and pets stay away from these hazardous areas.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks citizens for their cooperation in assisting with this annual request.
