Notice: Amendments to Cemeteries By-law
November 02, 2015
Sault Ste. Marie City Council passed amendments to Cemeteries By-law 2012-129 on September 14, 2015 and October 26, 2015. The by-law amendments will become effective once approved by the Provincial Cemetery Registrar.
The existing by-law prohibited animals (except service animals) within the cemetery. The amendment provides that leashed pets are permitted on cemetery grounds. Owners must control their animals at all times and clean up after them if necessary.
Markers on Graves
The existing by-law permitted only one marker on a grave. The amendment provides for additional markers to be placed on a single grave.
The October 26, 2015 by-law amendment provides that artificial flowers may be permitted on graves having a marker (restricted to the area in front of the marker, no wide than 40 cm and no longer than the marker base). Previously only fresh flowers were permitted.
Copies of the by-law amendments are available at the office of the City Clerk, Level 4, Civic Centre, 99 Foster Drive, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, P6A 5X6 and online below.
