City launches Mayor for a Day contest

Monday, May 9, 2016

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is launching its first 'Mayor for a Day' contest to encourage Grade 5 and 6 elementary students to get involved in their local government. This contest provides the opportunity for youth to submit an idea to City Council on how to make Sault Ste. Marie a better place to live.

"I'm excited to be participating in this contest and I'm looking forward to spending time with our young Mayor for a Day and their class this June. I'd like to thank Sault North Rotary for partnering with us on this fun initiative," remarked Mayor Christian Provenzano.

The winner will take a photo with the Mayor, tour the Civic Centre and officially open a Council meeting - and of course, host a class pizza party. The winner will also receive an iPad Mini!

The 'Mayor for a Day' initiative is open to students in grades 5 and 6. To enter the contest students must submit an essay, letter, poem, picture, song, video or any other creative piece to answer these questions:
  1. Why would you like to be the Mayor for a day?
  2. If you were the Mayor, what would you do?
  3. How did you come up with your idea?
  4. What are the things you like best about Sault Ste. Marie?
For contest information and an entry form, go online to saultstemarie.ca/mayorforaday. Entry forms are also available at the Mayor's office - Civic Centre - 99 Foster Drive.

The deadline for submissions is May 27: the winner will be announced June 3.
