Sweeping of City Streets Underway

Monday, May 4, 2015

The City's annual street sweeping program has begun in Sault Ste. Marie and is expected to run 7 days a week until the end of May. Residents are reminded to avoid placing sand, gravel, and lawn clippings on roadways.

"Street sweeping is important for the safety of our residents and our environment," says Larry Girardi, the City's Commissioner of Public Works and Transportation. "Our sweeping program removes winter debris and prevents it from entering the storm drains, keeping city waterways cleaner. It cuts down on air pollution caused by dust and keeps our roads safer by removing loose gravel and improving mobility."

Lawn clippings, in addition to swept up sand and gravel, should be placed in brown paper compost waste bags and left curbside for pickup. The weight limit for each bag must not exceed 20 kgs or 44 lbs - overweight bags will be tagged and left behind. Do not place foreign objects in compost bags as contaminated bags will not be picked up.

Drivers are asked to approach cautiously when they encounter slow moving street sweeping vehicles.

The City of Sault Ste Marie thanks citizens for their patience during the spring maintenance period. For additional information, contact the Public Works and Transportation department at 705-759-5201.
