City to Commemorate Sir William H. Hearst’s Legacy

Monday, May 25, 2015

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is exploring ways to commemorate the legacy of former Ontario Premier and Sault resident; Sir William H. Hearst.

A Committee, led by Councillor Matthew Shoemaker, will recommend the most appropriate recognition for the former Premier to City Council.

"Sir William H. Hearst was Ontario's Premier during World War I and a staunch ally of Canada's war effort. His remarkable achievements included giving women the right to vote municipally and provincially in 1917. He is perhaps Sault Ste. Marie's highest achieving political figure and his record deserves recognition in his former riding," says Councillor Shoemaker. "We are in the process of doing research and would welcome ideas from the public on how we should recognize this prominent historical figure."

Potential options for acknowledging his political legacy include naming a facility, structure or civic holiday after Hearst.

Public suggestions and ideas for recognition can be submitted by email until June 4 to hearst@cityssm.on.ca.
