Sault Ste. Marie Recognizes International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

On March 21, the Local Immigration Partnership in cooperation with Sault College, Algoma University, Algoma University Students' Union Local 82, Sault Community Career Centre, Sault Ste. Marie Public Library - Centennial Branch, and the Art Gallery of Algoma invite the public to celebrate diversity and commemorate the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. On this day we will unite to help raise awareness and promote a greater understanding of racism and discrimination while celebrating diversity and tolerance.

The following events will take place on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Unity Walk at the Sault Ste. Marie Courthouse - 11 a.m.
Members of the community will join together and walk from the front steps of the Sault Ste. Marie Courthouse to the Civic Centre, demonstrating their commitment to ending racial discrimination.

Address by Mayor Provenzano and Guests at City Hall - 12:15 p.m.
Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Christian Provenzano as well as other distinguished guests will deliver an address on the Civic Centre steps about the importance of diversity and eliminating racial discrimination within the community.

Art is a Universal Language at the Art Gallery of Algoma - 1 p.m.
The Art Gallery of Algoma (AGA) is featuring exhibition tours, the Art Around the World map and hands-on crafts featuring different cultures. Refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Local Immigration Partnership.

Let's ERAD at Sault College in the Common Link - 2 p.m.
With the support of the Sault Community Career Centre and New to the Sault, Sault College's Let's ERAD (Eliminate Racism and Discrimination by Celebrating Diversity) will take place from 2 - 4 p.m. in the Common Link. Booths will be set up so members of the community can ask questions and get more information about different minority groups within our society.

Embracing Community and Respect at Algoma University - 5 p.m.
Algoma University will be hosting a panel discussion with the community in the Great West Life Amphitheatre. Panellists will include Algoma University Board of Governors Chair Asima Vezina, Jane Omollo and Saira Anjum with the Sault Community Career Centre, as well as student representatives. Entertainment and refreshments will follow in the Speakeasy featuring Trevor Tchir.

We encourage the community to join us on March 21 to offer your support and celebrate the amazing diversity within our community. Together, we all contribute to the elimination of racial discrimination.
