McMeeken Centre CO update - March 6, 2017

Monday, March 6, 2017

The W.J. McMeeken Centre on Goulais Avenue will remain closed until at least Wednesday, March 8, 2017 as officials continue to investigate the carbon monoxide incident of Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

The carbon monoxide detector system malfunctioned and the cause of this is still being determined. The unit has been repaired; however, extra detectors have been placed in the facility.

The investigation initially centred on heating units and the ice resurfacing machine as the source of carbon monoxide emissions. The ice resurfacing machine has been tested and its emissions meet factory-established guidelines.

A third-party engineering firm has been retained to investigate other potential causes of the carbon monoxide emissions. Prior to re-opening, the City will implement the recommendations of this firm.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority investigation revealed minor unrelated issues with equipment on the roof of the McMeeken Centre, which issues have since been rectified. They found no deficiencies related to the incident.

Staff continues to work with user groups to minimize the impact of the McMeeken Centre closure on them and the community.

The health and safety of citizens and staff is paramount. City staff continue to work diligently to identify the cause of this distressing incident.
