Watershed Conditions Statement - Flood Outlook

Friday, June 29, 2018

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to issue a Watershed Conditions Statement in regard to anticipated watershed conditions.

The current rainfall predicted for the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township may result in precipitation amounts up to 50 mm this afternoon and overnight.

In addition, a further 50 mm of precipitation may occur Saturday afternoon and into Sunday. These storms may reach severe levels for wind speeds and possible hail.

Currently, local rivers, creeks and streams are at seasonal levels and we do not anticipate flooding however, the intensity of the possible thunderstorms may have the capacity to back up water in low lying areas and areas with poor drainage.

The flood control channels owned and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority are currently flowing at seasonal levels. The flood control channels will experience a rise in water levels. It is important to remember that the water in rivers, streams and the channels could be fast flowing. The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority will continue to closely monitor stream flows across the watershed.

The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority would like to extend a warning to residents and visitors to use extreme caution when close to rivers, creeks and streams. High water levels and flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from fast flowing rivers and streams.

This statement is in effect until July 1, 2018.
