Parkrun is coming to Sault Ste. Marie every Saturday

Thursday, June 8, 2017

Looking for a fun way to meet people and enjoy the great outdoors? It's time to lace up and get active with parkrun. Every Saturday for the rest of 2017, a parkrun is taking place at Bellevue Park. The event kicks off this Saturday, June 10 at 9:00 a.m. Persons of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in this free forum.

Bellevue parkrun is a 5-kilometre challenge that begins near the parking lot on Lake Street adjacent to Topsail Island with the route winding through the waterfront park. Those participating for the first time are asked to register online at www.parkrun.ca/bellevue. A hard copy of one's personal barcode will be required to be scanned after each run to determine one's time. Parkruns are held weekly in 14 countries around the world.

Local organizer Andy Bessell, who took part in the forum while living in the United Kingdom and South Africa, recently moved to Sault Ste. Marie and wanted to bring the event to his hometown. "I really enjoyed parkruns, and with the natural beauty of the Sault, I thought the event would be a perfect fit for the community," he said. "I look forward to meeting participants at the inaugural Bellevue parkrun this Saturday."

Bellevue parkrun is supported by activeSault, a municipal program that assists people of all ages and abilities in living a healthier life. "This is a great way to meet people while getting active," said Jennifer Amadio, Sport & Recreation Community Development & Partnership Coordinator for the City of Sault Ste. Marie. "I encourage citizens to register for Bellevue parkrun and take advantage of this unique recreational opportunity."
