Friday, June 3, 2016

The City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie North are pleased to announce the winner of the inaugural 'Mayor for a Day' contest. Muammar Amhalhal, a Grade Six student from Ben R. McMullin Public School, will be Sault Ste. Marie's first-ever 'Mayor for a Day'.

Mayor Christian Provenzano says, "What I really liked about Muammar's essay was how his personality shone through in his writing. He was able to blend humour with serious subject matter to create a really thought-provoking piece."

The contest drew many applications from schools across the city. Honourable mentions for creative submissions go to:
  • Jacob Charlebois, Grade Six, Parkland
  • Abby Delavalle, Grade Five, St. Paul's
  • Carly Higo, Grade Six, St. Paul's
  • Jayden Lefrancois, Grade Six, Anna McCrea
  • Alexa Naslovar, Grade Five, St. Paul's
"I'd like to thank all of the students who submitted entries to the contest. There was great creativity on display, as well as many good ideas and a ton of passion for our community," says Mayor Provenzano.

As 'Mayor for a Day', Muammar will officially open the June 13, 2016 meeting of City Council and his essay will be read at the beginning of the Council meeting. Muammar will also get to tour the Civic Centre and participate in some of Mayor Provenzano's activities. His class at Ben R. McMullin will receive a pizza party and a visit from the Mayor.

The Mayor for a Day Contest was sponsored jointly by the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Soo North Rotary.
