Saultites contribute to mural mosaic marking Canada's 150

Thursday, July 13, 2017

The community is invited to the Civic Centre lobby on Monday, July 17 at 12:15 p.m. to celebrate its official Canada 150 Mosaic Mural. The national project brings 150 communities together to create murals in celebration of Canada's unique culture and history. The project spans coast-to-coast, with each mural telling the story of the communities in which they were created.

"The National Mosaic Mural is a perfect Canada 150 project for our community" says Canada 150 Chair, Susan Myers. "We are located at the heart of the Great Lakes, in the centre of Canada and Sault Ste. Marie is a midpoint for many who travel across the country on the trans-Canada highway. I am very happy we are a participant and the completed mural will hang in the Civic Centre as a Sault Celebrates Canada 150 project. I want to thank City staff for bringing this project forward."

The Sault Ste. Marie mural consists of 400 individually-painted four-inch tiles and stands eight feet high by eight feet wide depicting a defining image of the community. The whitefish on the mosaic is symbolic of the ancient fishing grounds of the Indigenous peoples who first settled in the area. As an international City sharing a border with the United States, the International Bridge is over the big waterway while the Great Lakes freighter on the mural depicts the shipping industry which is integral to the City's economy. All the participating community mosaic murals are set on railway tracks to represent a virtual connection of the country as a nod to the rail transportation that helped build Canada 150 years ago. For Sault Ste. Marie, this symbolism holds great significance reminiscent of its world renowned tour train.

The community, as well as those individuals that painted tiles, are invited to join the City as it celebrates the completion of its mosaic. All 150 community murals will be displayed as a unified mosaic at canada150mosaic.com.
