Create a piece of history with the Canada 150 mural mosaic

Tuesday, January 17, 2017

As part of local Canada 150 activities, the Mayor's Committee on Celebrate Canada 150 is inviting residents to participate in the creation of Sault Ste. Marie's mural mosaic.

The mural will be composed of 400 individually-painted four-inch tiles. Once assembled, it will stand eight feet high by eight feet wide, and will depict a defining image of the community.

Tiles for the mural will be painted at a series of one hour workshops to be held at the Ermatinger Clergue National Historic Site – Discovery Centre on February 14 and 15, 2017. All material will be provided and there is no cost to participate. Those interested in attending a workshop can visit saultstemarie.ca/muralmosaic to register. Spaces are limited.

Committee co-chair, City Councillor Judy Hupponen says, "Everyone is invited to contribute to this community project. You don't need to be an artist, just bring your love for Sault Ste. Marie, your enthusiasm and your creativity."

Once completed, the mural will be mounted, clear-coated and photographed. It will be unveiled during Multiculturalism Day on June 27, 2017 and will be permanently displayed in Sault Ste. Marie.

Committee co-chair and City Councillor Susan Myers says, "Creating the mural mosaic is our City's first event to kick off the celebration of the country's 150th birthday and a unique way for us to participate at a community level in a national project."

Sault Ste. Marie is one of 150 communities from across the country that has been approached to participate in the Canada 150 Mosaic Project. The City's mural will be connected virtually to other community murals online at Canada150Mosaic.com.
