Sault Ste. Marie Launches Healthy Kids Community Challenge

Monday, January 11, 2016

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is among 45 communities in Ontario selected to take part in The Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC), which promotes healthy eating, physical activity and healthy lifestyles choices for children.

Funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the HKCC is a joint three-year project organized in partnership between the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma Public Health and the Algoma Leadership Table. Various community partners, including health, education, recreation and local business, will work together to implement community-based programs that support healthy habits among local children and their families.

"Sault Ste. Marie being selected to participate in the Healthy Kids Community Challenge is great news for families in our community," said David Orazietti MPP. "The commitment and collaboration of our local leaders in business, education and health have been an inspiration, and I look forward to seeing the difference this challenge will make in the lives of so many children."

A pick-up ball hockey event with the Soo Greyhounds hockey team will officially launch the local Challenge. This event organized for kids 12 and under, will be held January 23 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Queen Street in front of the Essar Centre.

"I'd like to thank the Greyhounds organization for their support and participation in kicking-off the Healthy Kids Challenge," says Mayor Christian Provenzano. "As successful young athletes, the Greyhounds are setting positive examples for our local youth about the benefits of leading active and healthy lifestyles."

Kids will enjoy 5 minute rotating games for the duration of the two-hour event. Participant groups will be based on age and parents/guardians must sign a permission form for each player. The registration form and participant waiver is available online at saultstemarie.ca/HKCC and at the event registration desk.

The first 500 kids to arrive at the event with adult accompaniment will receive a new hockey stick and ball to keep. Helmets are recommended, but not provided.

In the event players are underdressed for the weather, a community closet (limited clothing sizes and quantities) will be provided to help kids stay warm and in the game!
