Public Information Session: Regulations for Second Units

Tuesday, February 19, 2019

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has launched Shape the Sault to create a new Official Plan for our city. As part of Shape the Sault, City staff are proposing changes to the City's current Official Plan and Zoning By-law to add policies and regulations on 'Second Units'. Changes are being proposed in advance of completing a new Official Plan to meet Provincial requirements and local interest related to Second Units. It is anticipated that these changes will be considered by City Council in April 2019.

"The Province requires municipalities to permit Second Units in single detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings, in both urban and rural areas," explains Don McConnell, Director of Planning. "Second Units are self-contained accessory residential units built within dwellings, built as part of accessory structures such as garages, or built as standalone accessory structures. Basement apartments, garage suites and coach houses are all examples of Second Units."

City staff are hosting a public information session regarding Second Units:

Date: Tuesday, February 26, 2019
Time: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (come and go format)
Venue: Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle (306 McNabb St., between Willow Ave. and Pine St.)

All are welcome to attend the public information session and share questions and comments with City staff. For more information and to stay informed, visit www.shapethesault.ca.
