Mayor Provenzano Encourages Businesses to Explore Canada-Ontario Job Grant

Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Mayor Christian Provenzano is encouraging local businesses to help their employees gain new skills and training by taking advantage of the Canada-Ontario Job Grant. The program can assist with covering direct training costs for workers, up to a maximum of $10,000 per employee.

"Staff from Employment Solutions and the Sault Community Career Centre explained the Canada-Ontario Job Grant to me at a recent meeting and I have been enthusiastic about the program ever since," says Provenzano. "The grant offers local employers an excellent incentive to strengthen their workforces by supporting training and skills upgrading for employees."

The Job Grant provides support to employers who wish to purchase training for their employees. The grant can cover two-thirds of direct costs, up to the $10,000 limit for each employee. Employers are required to cover the remaining one-third of costs, though there is flexibility for small businesses to provide in-kind contributions towards their share of expenses. Training must be delivered by an eligible third party trainer, such as a college, university or product vendor.

Provenzano notes that a variety of Sault Ste. Marie businesses have already made applications to participate in the program. He is hopeful that more local employers - including small businesses - will follow suit.

Says Provenzano, "Investing in employee training is one way for local companies to boost their productivity and maintain a competitive edge. Businesses will also benefit by having employees who are flexible, adaptable and in touch with current trends."

To be eligible for the grant, employers must be licensed to operate a business and reside in Ontario. They must also be in compliance with all federal and provincial legislation and carry third party liability insurance. Broader Public Service organizations are not eligible to participate in the program.
