Essar Centre Light Fixture Incident

Thursday, August 31, 2017

The City of Sault Ste. Marie would like to advise the public of an incident that took place at the Essar Centre on the early evening of Wednesday, August 30, 2017. City staff are in the process of investigating a light fixture that fell onto the ice surface before the start of a Soo Greyhound training camp game.

At this time, it is presumed that a cast metal clip that secures the light to the bracket was broken. Work was undertaken through the night and morning by a third party electrician and additional safety fixture features were added and installed to all lights. This was done as a precaution to ensure that everything is safe before resuming activities on the ice. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported and the Greyhound training camp will resume today as scheduled.

The safety of users and staff at City facilities is paramount. City staff continue to work diligently to identify the cause of this incident. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
