The City of Sault Ste. Marie

Green Transportation

In 2009, the City launched an Idle Free Sault Ste. Marie awareness campaign to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases produced by the municipal fleet. City staff led by example and encouraged the public to turn off their vehicles when possible. Idle Free Zones were established at various municipal facilities and presentations were given to City staff on the effects of unnecessary idling.

Transit Services has been the City's primary advocate for the Idle Free program. With small changes to the use of City buses and education of staff, Transit Services has been able to save approximately 40,000 litres of fuel 100 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually.

In 2013, the City of Sault Ste. Marie, in partnership with the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, hosted the Green Transportation Show where participants found out about the latest and greatest in electric, hybrid and fuel efficient vehicles, green equipment, technology, services and programs. Participants visited booths, watched demonstrations, listened to green transportation experts from across the Province and even test drove the latest vehicles.

Idle Free Sault Ste. Marie and the Green Transportation Show are part of a larger Green Fleet Plan developed in 2011 with contributions from relevant City Departments.
