Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need a permit for Open-Air Burning?

Yes - All open air burning in Ontario requires approval by the Chief Fire Official (CFO). In Sault Ste. Marie, Fire Prevention Officers will visit the proposed site for burning and review the guidelines with the individual requesting the permit. Once satisfied that all criteria is met, the Fire Prevention Officer will approve the permit. If the criteria set out in the guidelines is not met the permit will be refused.

What happens if I burn without a permit?

Failure to burn without approval is a provincial offence for which an individual can be charged. A charge can result in a penalty of up to $50,000 and up to one year imprisonment.

Are there other requirements for approval?

Yes - When a Fire Prevention Officer inspects your site, he/she will also request to inspect the home for a working smoke alarm. If the alarm is not working, the permit will not be approved until this Fire Code violation is corrected. For additional information see Smoke Alarms.
