Election Workers

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is hiring individuals to work on Voting Day - Monday, October 22, 2018.

Various election positions are available:

  • Deputy Returning Officer
  • Voting Clerk
  • Greeter
To be eligible, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older and legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Not a candidate running in the 2018 Municipal Election
  • Not a member of a candidate's immediate family
  • Not permitted to campaign for a candidate on Voting Day
Qualified applicants will be required to complete an in-person or phone interview. Successful candidates must attend a 3-hour training session and work approximately 10-13 hours on Voting Day.

Election experience is an asset but not necessary for all positions. Preference will be given to individuals who have worked at previous municipal elections and received favourable evaluations.

General Responsibilities

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

  • Maintains custody and control of ballots and the Voters List for the assigned voting subdivision
  • Issues ballots to electors and provides voting instructions to voters
  • Receives Appointment of Voting Proxy forms
  • Completes Deputy Returning Officer Ballot Statement form
DROs will be required to bring supplies to their assigned voting location and return the Ballot Statement form to the Civic Centre after the close of polls and once ballots are counted.

Voting Clerk

  • Assists the DRO to set up and open the voting station
  • Verifies voter ID and strikes the voter's name off the Voters List
  • Informs the DRO of the correct ballot to use
  • Assists with adding/correcting voter names to the Voters List


  • Directs voters and candidates' representatives to voting areas
  • Provides electors with information regarding satisfactory proof of ID and address
  • Directs the orderly flow of people in the voting place
  • Assists electors with accessibility requirements

Hours on Voting Day

Polls open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on Voting Day - Monday, October 22, 2018.

Election workers are required to be present at the assigned voting location from 9:00 a.m. until after the polls close and all ballots are counted.

Payment Rates

Deputy Returning Officer: $220.00/day
Voting Clerk: $185.00/day
Greeter: $140.00/day

To receive payment, workers must attend pre-election training and work on Voting Day.

Training Sessions

If your application is successful and you have been selected to work the 2018 Municipal Election, you will be required to attend a mandatory 3-hour training session at the Civic Centre the week of October 15, details of which will be provided at a later date. Workers who do not attend the training session will forfeit their placement.
