Archeological Planning and Management

Jasper Taconite

The City of Sault Ste. Marie has a long cultural history that begins thousands of years ago and continues to the present. The archaeological sites that are the physical remains of this lengthy settlement history represent a fragile and non-renewable cultural heritage resource.

The Planning Act, Ontario Cemeteries Act, and the Ontario Heritage Act require municipalities to plan wisely for the conservation of archeological resources.

In 2011, the City retained Archaeological Services Inc. to undertake a study of Sault Ste. Marie's archeological resources.
